2019 Statistics
2019 was an interesting year as from the beginning of June I moved to a flat city, just a few meters above sea level... Quite a change from my previous years, spent in a mountainous area with the average running altitude of almost 1000 meters above sea level...
The next table summarizes the running and cycling statistics for the last years.
A few comments on the 2019 statistics.
The next table summarizes the running and cycling statistics for the last years.
A few comments on the 2019 statistics.
Running
- Almost the same number of runs as on 2018
- The total distance is slightly smaller as there is a bit less fun running on the plains...
- As there were far fewer climbs, the average speed is increased quite a bit
- The total elevation gain decreased to a bit more than 5/12 of 2018... I spent just 5 months of 2019 in the mountains...
Cycling
- Similar number of recorded cycling trips as in 2018. I used a bike more, but the city commuting is not part of this statistic.
- The distance is less than half of last year, Some of the cycling trips were family style, on my city "Dutch Style" bike.
- The average speed is also less than in 2018, due to the family rides.
- The ride elevation is greatly reduced due to the new much flatter area where I currently live...
- Longest ride is still a respectable 205 km

2018 Summary
With the help of Strava, here are my 2018 end of year statistics:
A few comments:
Here is the 2018 summary that Strava calculated automatically. The values are slightly different from the table above as the interval does not exactly match the 2018 year.
- Less running than last year, but more serious cycling.
- Taking the cycling into account it looks like the total effort is greater than last year's
- Highest average elevation gain per run
- Longest average run length
- With 122 km average length and 1457 m of climbing per ride, I can say that my rides were no joke
And a photo from this year last activity. Skiing in powder with my daughter!
Have a happy 2019!

10000 km as Vegan
It is again time to do my running statistics for another year: 2017. Here is my last running year compared to the previous ones:
I finally managed to run less and slower than last years, when I felt I ran a bit too much. I did a bit more cycling this year (1400 km) and quite a few more mountain hikes, alpine and back-country ski days and photo tours that I did not log. In fact, overall I spent more time out in the nature, but at a slower pace which is exactly what I was planning to do.
It is 3 years since I became a vegan and during this time I ran more than 10000 kilometers. This is more than the distance I ran in the previous three years as an omnivore. Actually, my running time and distances did not change that much since 2012. What got better is the quality of my runs.
I remember that a few years ago, when I started to be serious about trail running I was doing it much more intensely, at a higher heart rate, and this was a bit too stressful for my body. During the last years I tries to listen more to my body and to run more relaxed, at a lower heart rate. This does not mean that I am not doing intense exercises. I do intense runs, but only when my body feels ready for it and these are mostly steep long mountain up-hills.
I realized that being vegan transformed me into a much more aware person. I am more aware of the environment and my body. I started to notice things I would totally ignore before. I feel now more connected to the surrounding natural world and more aware of the stupid and harmful things our modern world does to this fragile planet.
For 2018 I plan to continue along the same lines. Running mostly at a enjoiable pace and do more cross-training: mountain hikes and bicycle rides. And of course, I will continue my vegan life style!

2015 Statistics
Today I had my last run of the year. After a very warm December that felt like late autumn, two days ago we finally got a dust of snow followed by frosty temperatures. It was a beautiful day today. Like yesterday, at -5 to -10C it felt a bit cold. However, it was sunny and calm with perfectly clear atmosphere. The thin frozen snow on the trails gave one of the best surfaces for running! So I enjoyed my run through the forest very much! Much more than I would have enjoyed skiing on mostly artificial snow and crowded slopes, just a little bit higher than my running route on Postavaru Mountain.
Here is a photo I took during today's running session with my poor phone camera:
As it was my last run of 2015, it is time to do some statistics. This year I logged all of my runs with the Strava app so gathering the statistics was very easy! This is what Strava reports:
What strikes me is the fact that I had the impression that I ran much slower than last year. On most runs I tried to be relaxed and keep my heart rate low. However my pace in 2015 was quite a bit better than in 2014! This may mean that I am in better shape... and maybe my pure vegan diet during the whole 2015 also helped. There is another possible explanation. Maybe I had a bit less accumulated elevation gain than last year - The figure for last year is an rather conservative estimate, while this year the elevation gain is taken straight out from Strava and Strava tends to overestimate it a bit.
Speaking on pace and elevation gain, one can notice that in 2012 I had a really good average pace... but that was my second year of running. Not only that I struggled to run fast that year, but most runs were on city trains with rather low elevation gain.
2015 is also the year when I did not purchase any new pair of running shoes... I had already too many. I however threw away three pairs that had lived their life... Things will change in 2016 as most of my running shoes are approaching their end of life.
So this is it for 2015!

Distance | 3,664.7 km |

I ran just a little bit more than last year but otherwise the year looks quite similar to the previous one.
So here is a statistics table for the last four years that includes strictly only running sessions.

My 2014 Running Year in Retrospect
Here are my 2014 running statistics:
196 running sessions totaling:
- 3600 km of running. It does not include other activities such as hiking or ski tours. This is almost 700 km more than in 2013
- Estimated around 150.000 m of elevation gain. This gives about 750 meters per run, and an average gradient of 8%.
- Average speed 8.31 km/h. About the same as in 2013.
- Average pace 7.13 min/km. Looks rather slow, but take into account that half of my routes are uphill, often on steep slopes.
- Average run length 18.3 km. 1.5 km longer than in 2013.
- Just 2 Races, down from 7 during 2013
Some comments
Less races
In 2013 decided to race less, stress my body less and enjoy every bit of my runs in the nature. Yet the two races I ran were quite serious. Brasov Marathon and Hit the Top (sky running in Bucegi Mountains).
Strava
I thought that it may be the time to finally try a smartphone and found a cheap one with a very good GPS, good battery and bright screen. I installed Strava and connected with a small community of runners in Brasov. So although I did not race much in official races, during summer I was racing along the Strava segments and accumulating kilometers... During the autumn I realized that I should take it easier...
180-age Heart Rate
Around the time whan I realised that my body may try to tell me that my running is too intense I discovered the 180-age formula for optimal heart rate training. So I revived my heart rate monitor watch and use it now and then. Just look on the web for more info about this formula.
I really find running at this heart rate very enjoyable and relaxing. It is hard to keep to this heart rate on uphills so my HR is about 5 bpm higher on most uphills, and about 10 bpm higher on the really steep ones. On downhills I have the reverse "problem"... I cannot raise my HR to 180-age. This is not bad at all, as my runs are often longer than two hours so I do not stress my heart too much...
2015 new Year Resolution?
Not really a resolution... It came spontaneously after two rich Christmas meals that made me feel energy-less. and after I did some research about nutrition... hopefully from the right sources...
I decided to give up all milk and dairy products and see what happens. This is a hard one in our culture where everybody appreciates good cheese and yogurt and milk are common snacks. Moreover, soft cheese and milk are common ingredients in lots of savory dishes and tasty deserts...
I was already eating very little meat, so I did next "logical" step and for a week now, I have a 100% vegan diet. Will it work? Will it last? Time will tell... Check my blog in one year for the 2015 year review. So far I have noticed that my skin is less greasy, my dandruff is virtually gone my nose less runny... and my running performance is not affected.
