Carpathians' Most Beautiful Route

Every year I return to what I believe is the most beautiful route in the Carpathians. 25 km of amazing landscapes; form some of the wildest corners of the Carpathians to beautiful mountain villages.
The route follows two thirds of the Piatra Craiului Marathon route, a race that I ran twice in the past. However I enjoy it more at a slower pace that gives me time to admire the landscapes.

Last year I witnessed the height of the autumn season with such amazing colors I have never seen in other parts of the world:

The variety of spectacular landscapes along this route is amazing. Starting in the deep upper valley of Bârsa River by Plaiul Foii, the route follows a mountain stream through the forest, going up towards the impressive western rocky side of Piatra Craiului massif.

Once it reaches the base of the cliff faces, the route continues to climb gently between the huge rocky walls and the forests below, passing the most impressive scree areas in the Carpathian Mountains (lose rocks accumulations).

The views to the west are impressive. Endless forests and majestic mountains: Iezer-Păpusa and Făgărași massifs.

The route goes then up a steep valley (Valea Urzicii) and reaches the Piatra Craiului's southern end of the ridge in Funduri Saddle. This is the highest point of the route: 1900m, which is more than 300 meters lower than the highest peak along the ridge. The route follows the ridge for a short while, then descends on the other side trough beautiful alpine meadows. Here the view opens to the east. The view is dominated in the distance by the mighty Bucegi massif.

After crossing the grassy expanses of Joaca Pass the landscape changes again. The route reaches the beautiful mountain villages of the Bran area. The views are so peaceful and picturesque! We pass by Peștera village then through Măgura village.

From Măgura village, a short descent through the forest brings us to the famous Fântăna lui Botorog water spring. Time to refresh for the last few kilometres to Zărnești town, the end of this amazing route.

Autumn Again!

Mid to late October is the best time for autumn colors around Brasov. Such bright and beautiful colors, just before the days get gray and too short.
After a wet and cold start of October, the weather changed into an Indian Summer... The warmest October in more than 50 years... Last years we had plenty of records like this... the global warming is so visible! Warmer winters with less snow, dry and warm autumns, extremely hot summers...

Here is a selection of photos taken in the forests and on the mountains around Brasov during third week of October 2019.

A Tale of two Peaks

Mountain hikers in Romania know that the months of September and early October can offer some of the best hiking days during the year. The weather can take and form up there on the summits, but every autumn there are one or two periods of several days in a row with very stable and beautiful weather.

This year we just had such a week with wonderful autumnal weather. Warmer than usual, dry, with deep blue sky and almost no winds high on the summits. The cooler and dry weather also means that the atmosphere is clearer than in summer, offering stunning views from the mountain tops. The air gets even clearer during the sunny and frosty winter days.

Last week I did two speed hikes up on the mountains to two famous peaks of the Southern Carpathians:
  • Fagarasi Mountains: Moldoveanu Peak (2544m), the highest point of Romania
  • Bucegi Massif: Omu Peak (2505) the highest peak in Bucegi Massif and just north of it, the prominent Bucsoiu Peak (2492m)
On both trips we were rewarded with beautiful views that reached far far away, over 100km in distance. I was surprised to recognize the silhouette of Bucegi mountains seen from Moldoveanu Peak!

In a straight line, the distance between the two peaks is not that great, about 59km, but there are many mountain crests in between.  It is easy to recognize the shape of Bucegi mountains and the distinct triangular shape of Bucsoiu Peak from Moldoveanu Peak. However, looking the other way from Bucegi mountains, it is much harder to identify Moldoveanu peak among the multiple peaks and crests of Fagaras Mountains. I only identified it on the photo later at home, with the help of Google Earth software.

From Moldoveanu I could also see to the east another even more distant mountain. I was not sure what it was, until I got got home and checked with Google Earth. It was Ciucas massif, 93km away!  On a winter day, with much clearer atmosphere, I may have recognize the rocky peak of Ciucas.

As I try to be as light as possible on my mountain runs and hikes, I only had the camera of my phone with me. It is just good enough for documenting the trip. Here are some of the best photos I took during the trips.
