Winter!

Less than a week ago I was sun-bathing on the mountain peaks... In the meanwhile first show of the winter arrived! It is real winter high on the mountains! I had to swap my trail running shoes for hiking boots...
Here are some photos taken this weekend on Postavarul and Piatra Mare mountains, near Brasov.

Running on the The Twin Peaks of Brasov

Today, with another Mihai, an experimented trail runner I finally did a run I planned for a long time. It is becoming a classical route, completed by many experienced trail runners.  The route reaches both peaks of Brasov mountains; Piatra Mare (1844m) and Postavarul (1799m) peaks. The two massifs are separated by the deep Timis Valley at about 800m altitude. It is not an easy route and I do not recommend it for solo runners as part of the route, especially the south side of Postavarul Mountain, passes through quite wild forests.

While the two peaks are not too high, both climbs of the route are quite steep and take you more than 1000m higher than the starting point. The accumulated elevation gain of the route is a respectable 2300m.

Today, the last day of October, was a perfect autumn day: Perfect Blue skyes, cool, calm and dry weather; just perfect conditions for running. I do not want to imagine how it is to climb on the south side of Postavarul Mountain on a hot summer day!

Here is the GPS recorded route of today:

The views and the clarity of the atmosphere were stunning as it is often the case in late autumn and winter. Below are some photos I took today. The full album is here.

Winter Hike in Piatra Mare

Yesterday I took a break from my usual outdoor activities, running and skiing. With Udo, an experienced nature guide, I did a slow pace hike on Piatra Mare, mountain. We hoped for a beautiful sunny day, but the day was cloudier than we have expected. We even experienced a short and intense  beautiful show shower up on the mountain. It was a great hike and we enjoyed the tranquility of the winter landscape.
We took the classical route from Tamina valley to the top, then down on the other side to Piatra Mare mountain hut, and back  to Brasov city on the popular Familiar trail. After more than two weeks from the latest snow fall, the snow on the trail was already well packed by other hikers so walking was easy.

Here are the best photos I took along the route.

Piatra Mare: South to North

Yesterday the weather was just perfect for trail running. It was a cool but dry summer day. My fellow trail runner Cristi had the idea of a very nice trail running route in Piatra Mare. We started from the edge of the mountain town Predeal and finished in Dambul Morii, on the edge of Brasov, our home town. The route traverses Piatra Mare massiv from South to North, reaching the beautiful Piatra Mare Peak (1844m)

In is a rather short route of around 18 Kilometers. It has only about 1000m of elevation gain to climb. The start of the Route in Predeal is already at 1100m altitude... so one can say that we cheated a bit...

Here are some photos I took along the way:
